Students - Set Up and Run GlobalProtect VPN

This article covers how CSUF students can install and run GlobalProtect VPN which is required to access some specific campus resources.

Students should be informed by their instructor or department/college if they need to use VPN to access a resource.

You will need to authenticate with Duo 2FA using either a push notification to the Duo Mobile app or a passcode generated by a text message or hardware token issued by the Student IT Help Desk.

If you do not have the app installed on your device, view instructions on how to set up the Duo Mobile app.

Download and Install GlobalProtect

2. Open the downloaded installer file.

3. Click Next (or Continue on a Mac) on each screen of the installation wizard to select the default installation options.

You will have to click Next/Continue several times.

4. When the installation is done, click Close.

Mac Users: you may want to keep the GlobalProtect installer rather than moving it to the trash as you will need this installer if you ever want to uninstall GlobalProtect.

1. Open GlobalProtect if it is not already open.

You will likely see the GlobalProtect icon in the task bar at the top (Mac) or bottom (PC) of your screen.

Don't see it there? You should be able to go to:

  • Mac: Go > Applications > GlobalProtect
  • PC: Start > Palo Alto Networks > GlobalProtect

2. Enter myvpn.fullerton.edu as the portal address. Then click Connect.

After you enter the portal address, GlobalProtect should save it and you won't have to enter it again on this computer. You'll just click Connect.

  2. Click Connect.

3. Mac users may see a required pop-up asking for access to your keychain. Enter the login password you use for your Mac and then click Always Allow.

Don't see this pop-up? You may need to click Disconnect on GlobalProtect and then try connecting again.

  1. Enter the login password for your Mac. This is the password that you use when you log on to your Mac.
  2. Click Always Allow.

4. Enter your campus username and password. Then click Log In.

It may take a few seconds for this screen to appear.

  2. Click Log In.

5. Choose your authentication method.

5.1. You will see that a login request has been pushed to your device. Under Device, you will see which device the push notification was sent to.

5.2. Go to your device to approve the Duo login request.

If you don't see the push notification in your notifications, open the Duo Mobile app to view the request.

5.1. Click Send Me a Push.

  1. Click Send Me a Push to send a push notification to your device.
  2. If you have multiple devices in Duo, use the drop-down menu to select the device you want to use to authenticate with.
5.2. Go to your device to approve the Duo login request.

If you don't see the push notification in your notifications, open the Duo Mobile app to view the request.

5.1. Select the device where you want to receive the text message. Then click Enter a Passcode.

  1. If you have multiple devices in Duo, select the one where you want to receive the text message from the drop-down menu.
  2. Then click Enter a Passcode.
5.2. Click Text me new codes.

5.3. Enter the passcode from the text message you receive. Then click Log In.

  1. Enter the passcode from the text message you received.
  2. Then click Log In.

5.1. Make sure that Token is selected as your Device. Then click Enter a Passcode.

  1. Choose Token in the Device field if not already selected.
  2. Click Enter a Passcode.
5.2. Enter the passcode from your hardware token and click Log In.

  2. Then click Log In.

6. Does GlobalProtect say "Still working?" Open the Duo app on your device to check for the Duo login request and approve it.

The Duo login request will time out if you wait too long to approve it. You may have to click Disconnect and try connecting to GlobalProtect again.

7. Once you have authenticated with Duo, you should be connected to GlobalProtect within a few seconds.

When you're ready to stop using Duo, click Disconnect.

8. You can now connect to the remote desktop or resources that you need to access.

Please contact the service owner of the campus resource to ensure that your access has been properly enabled if you experience issues connecting to the resource.
