Setting Up Your Microsoft Surface Laptop (CEDA)

This article shows students how to set up the Microsoft Surface they received from CEDA.

Getting Started with Your Surface

Signing into your Surface for the first time

1. Select a language. Then, click Yes.

  1. Choose which language you would like to continue the setup in.
  2. Click Yes.

2. Select United States as the region. Then, click Yes.

  2. Click Yes.

3. Select US as the main keyboard layout. Then, click Yes.

4. Click Skip when asked about adding a second keyboard layout.

5. Select a network to connect to.

I am on campus.

Connect to eduroam. Then, enter your student email address (e.g. [email protected]) and password to complete the network connection.

Remember to check Connect automatically so you don’t have to manually connect to this network in the future.

  1. Select eduroam.
  2. Click Connect. You will be prompted to enter your student username and password.
I am off-campus.

Select any available (and secure) wireless network.

If you're connecting to a network that you'll use frequently, such as your home internet, remember to check Connect automatically so you don’t have to manually connect to this network in the future.

  1. Select the network you want to connect to.
  2. Click Connect.

6. Once you’re connected, click Next. Your Surface will restart.

7. Enter your student email address (e.g. [email protected]) to sign in to Microsoft.

You must use your CSUF student email account to sign in to your Surface.

8. On the CSUF Student Authentication page, enter your student email address and password. Then, click Sign In.

9. You will be prompted to authenticate with Duo.

10. You’ll see a screen letting you know your device is being set up. Once it’s done, you’ll see a notification that your Surface is ready.

Available Apps

What apps are already installed?

  1. Click on the Start button to access your apps. 
  2. Office apps such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Teams are easily accessible from the Office tile group as well as in the list of apps. 
  3. Click Dropbox to access your Dropbox account on the web. 
How do I install additional apps?

Click CSUF - Student Software to view what other apps are available for download. 

Click on the CSUF – Student Software shortcut in the app list to visit the Student Software page.

  2. Click CSUF - Student Software to view apps that are available through the university.

OneNote

1. If prompted to sign in to get started, click Sign in or create account.

2. Enter your student email. Then, click Next.

  1. Enter your campus email address.
  2. Click Next.

3. On the CSUF Student Authentication page, enter your student email and password. Then, click Sign in.

4. Select a method to verify your identity to complete your sign in.

  1. Select Text to receive a verification code. The code entry page will open after your make this selection.
  2. Select Call to verify via phone call.
Using OneNote for note-taking

All of the notes you take on your Surface will be saved to the cloud. Be sure to keep OneNote open while the sync icon indicates your changes are being saved to the cloud.

When the arrows appear, OneNote is working on saving your changes.

When the cloud appears, the sync is complete. Your changes have been saved.

Career Coach

Accessing Career Coach on Microsoft Teams

Career Coach empowers you to discover your career path, grow real-world skills, and build your network. You’ll get guidance that is personalized to your education, skills, and interests. 

To access Career Coach, open the Microsoft Teams app. If prompted, sign in with your student email address and password. You’ll see the Career Coach icon in the left menu.
