Using the PDF Remediation App

This article covers how CSUF faculty, staff, and students can use the PDF Remediation app to identify and resolve many accessibility issues with PDF files.

Please note that the PDF Remediation app does not make PDF documents 100% accessible. It is still necessary to perform manual checks and some issues with require manual resolution.

1. Go to the Titan Accessible website.

Open a web browser to the Titan Accessible website.

2. Click on PDF Remediation button.

3. Click Login and Remediate My PDF.

4. Enter your campus email address. Then click Next.

  1. Enter your campus email address. Faculty/staff should enter their @fullerton.edu email address. Students should enter their @csu.fullerton.edu email address.
  2. Then click Next.

5. Enter your campus password. Then click Sign in.

  1. Enter your campus password. This is the same password that you use to log on to the campus portal.
  2. Then click Sign In.

6. You will be prompted to authenticate with Duo.

7. You are now on the PDF Accessibility Remediation page. Be sure to review the sections on the left for details on uploading PDFs and important information regarding the accessibility of processed documents.

  1. Document Requirements section will include the number of PDF documents that can be uploaded at the same time, the number of pages per PDF that can be processed, the document file size limit, and how long processed PDF files will be available for download in this app.
  2. Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) section will include the types of accessibility issues that are unable to be processed by this app, and must be manually reviewed and resolved. There are also links to Titan Accessible and the CSUF ATI website.

8. To start, either click on Choose Files to upload files or drag files from your local computer to the upload box.

    OR
  2. Drag the files you want to process from your local computer to the upload box.

8.1. If you clicked Choose Files, locate the files you want to process, and select them. Then click Open.

  1. Select one or more PDF files to process.
  2. Then click Open.

9. Click Upload and Process once you have added the file(s).

10. Under Remediation Results, you will see a spinning circle under Processed File as each file is processed.

If you see the spinning circle next to a file for more than 30 minutes and there are no results, there may have been an issue when processing the file.

  1. Double check that the file did not exceed the file size or page number limit.
  2. Try uploading the file again on its own in a few minutes as it may have been a temporary overload of the app.

11. Once the files have been processed, click View Report to check for any remaining issues.

11.1. Under After Summary, check for any numbers in the Needs Manual Check column and Failed column. These numbers mean that there are issues that you will need to manually review/resolve.

  1. Needs Manual Check items are generally things that cannot be checked or resolved by accessibility checkers such as color contrast or logical reading order.
  2. Failed items are generally things that the PDF Remediation app is unable to fix automatically such as a table summary, or alt text for a figure.

11.2. Click on each section in the Detailed Report to find the specific issues that need to be manually reviewed/resolved.

In the example below, there are two Needs manual check issues found in the Document section.

11.3. You can also click on Print Report to download a copy of this report.

12. Click Download to download a copy of the processed PDF file(s).

13. Using the Accessibility Report, perform the required manual checks and resolve any remaining issues on the PDF files.

A PDF file is not considered "remediated" until all manual checks have been performed, and all accessibility issues have been resolved.
