Splitting a PDF Document into Separate Files
This article covers how to split a PDF document into separate files, particularly to use the PDF Remediation app to resolve accessibility issues with a PDF.
These steps will show specifically how to split a PDF by the number of pages, although there are several other options when splitting a file.
Adobe Acrobat is part of Adobe Creative Cloud. Faculty/staff should have it installed on their rollout laptop/computer by default, but faculty, staff, and students can activate their Adobe Creative Cloud account and install Adobe Acrobat by following the steps on the IT Adobe Creative Cloud webpage.
4. Enter the number of pages you want to split by. Then click Split.
You can also experiment with other options under Split by and Output options to customize how the file is split and where the split files are saved.
- Enter the number of pages you want to split by. In the above example, the PDF will be broken down into separate 50-page PDFs until the end of the document is reached (e.g., a 200-page PDF would be split into four 50-page PDFs).
- Then click Split.
5. Once the split has been complete, you will see a confirmation of how many separate PDF files have been created. Click OK.
In the example below, the original PDF file was split into two PDF documents. There were 68 pages in the original PDF, so it was split into one 50-page PDF and one 18-page PDF.
6. Navigate to the location of the original PDF that you opened. You will see the split PDF files in the same location.
In the example below, I opened the Using Aesthetics to Improve Learning PDF from my Downloads folder. So the two split files were automatically saved to my Downloads folder.
7. After remediating the PDFs, you can use Adobe Acrobat to combine multiple PDFs back into a single PDF.
