Adding/Removing/Renaming Devices in Duo
This article covers how faculty, staff, and emeriti can add, remove, and rename their devices in their Duo account.
Note that faculty and staff are eligible for a maximum of five (5) devices connected to their Duo account: their office/campus phone extension plus four additional devices.
1. Open your web browser to the CSUF Duo Devices Management website.
Go to the CSUF Duo Devices Management website.
2. Enter your campus username and password. Place a checkmark next to I'm not a robot. Then click Login.
If you want to modify Duo devices for an administrative account (e.g., [email protected]), you should enter the username and password for the administrative account.
You may also be prompted to complete a captcha verification after clicking on I'm not a robot.

6. Choose how you want to authenticate with Duo and complete the authentication. Be sure you have the device available!
What do you want to do?
To update your phone number/device in Duo, you will need to first add another device and then remove the original device.
2. Choose Duo Mobile.
It's highly recommended to use the Duo Mobile app on a smartphone or tablet for the most secure authentication. However, you can add a landline or non-smartphone mobile phone by selecting Phone number and then following the prompts.
3. Enter your mobile phone number. Then click Add phone number.
Click I have a tablet if you are adding a tablet. The steps will be similar to the ones for adding a mobile phone.
- Enter your mobile phone number.
- Then click Add phone number.
4. Verify that the phone number is correct and then click Yes, it's correct.
5. Are you seeing a message that says Confirm Ownership?
The Confirm Ownership message appears when your phone number is already associated with an account in Duo. For example, if you are both staff and a student, you can link both your faculty/staff Duo account and your student Duo account with the same phone number. Or if you manage an administrative account (e.g., [email protected]), you can link both your individual Duo account (e.g., [email protected]) and the administrative account to the same phone number.
If you are not aware of your phone number being associated with another Duo account, immediately contact the IT Help Desk at [email protected] or 657-278-7777.

14. You're done! Your new phone is connected to Duo.
Duo will automatically choose your default device for you based on your available authentication methods and which device was added first.
By default, Duo will choose the most secure method of authentication based on the devices you have added to Duo and automatically send a push/text/call to that device. If you have multiple devices that are capable of the same authentication method (e.g., you have the Duo Mobile app installed on multiple devices), Duo will choose the device that was added to Duo first as your default device.
Duo authentication methods from most to least secure:
- Verified Duo Push
- Duo Mobile push approval
- Duo Mobile generated passcodes
- Hardware token passcodes
- SMS passcodes
- Phone call approval
There is currently no way for you to re-order your devices in your Duo account. The only way to re-order them is to delete a device and then re-add it to change which device was the first added.
- In the screenshot above, the Tuffy iOS device is currently the default device. The user would need to delete this device.
- The iOS device is currently the secondary device. The user can choose to authenticate with it, but it is not the default device.
- Note that because the Generic Smartphone (the user's campus phone) is not capable of receiving a Duo push, Duo automatically ignores it in favor of the first device that is capable of a Duo push since that is the most secure authentication method.
After you delete and re-add a device, the order of the devices will change.
- In the screenshot above, the iOS device is now the default device for this user.
- The Tuffy iOS device is now the secondary device for this user. The user can still choose to authenticate with it, but it is not the default device.
You must have at least one device/phone in Duo. If you have only a single phone/device in Duo, you won't be able to remove it. Please see the instructions under The phone number/device in Duo is wrong and I want to change it.
2. Select Delete.
3. Click Delete [name of your device] to confirm you want to remove the device from your Duo account.
The name of your device will depend on its operating system (e.g., Apple or Android) and whether you have renamed the device.
Changing the device name in Duo is particularly helpful for tablets since there is no phone number associated with them.
1. Click Edit next to the device you want to rename. Then select Rename.
- Click Edit next to the device you want to rename.
- Then click Rename.
2. Enter the new Device name you would like. Then click Rename.
- Enter the new Device name you want for the device.
- Then click Rename.
