Students: Adding/Removing Devices from Duo and Changing Duo Settings

This article covers how students can change their settings in Duo including adding or removing phone numbers/devices, changing their default device, and changing device options.

1. Open a web browser on a computer or laptop to the Student Duo Setup site.

Open your web browser to the Student Duo Setup app.

2. If prompted, enter your campus username and password. Then click Login.

What do you want to do?

The phone number/device in Duo is wrong and I want to change it

To update your phone number/device in Duo, you will need to first add another device and then remove the original device.

1. Click Add a new device.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

2. Click Call Me to authenticate by phone call. Click Enter a Passcode to request an authentication code by text message. Or click Send me a Push if you have the Duo Mobile app set up on your current mobile device.

Duo will call, text, or send a push notification to your current default device in Duo.

  1. Click Call Me and you will receive a phone call from Duo with instructions on how to authenticate (normally just press a number on your phone's dial pad).
  2. Click Enter a Passcode to get a text with a verification code. (Continue to 2.2)
  3. Click Send me a Push to get a push notification from the Duo Mobile app.
  4. Don't have access to your default device? Click I don't have access to my device. Get one-time authentication code. (Continue to 2.1)

Warning: If you chose option "D" Make sure you follow step 2.1 to prevent you from "looping" through the instructions.

2.1. Option D: I don't have access to my device. Get one-time authentication code.

  1. After selecting Option D; Fill out your personal information
  2. Click "Submit"
  1. Note: A code was sent to you personal alternate email.
  2. Select "Continue to Add device"

Important: You will be returned to the Duo Screen

  1. Make sure you select "Add a new Device" again.
  2. Click "Enter a Passcode" and enter the code sent to your email.
  3. Continue to Step 3

2.2. Option B: After clicking Enter a Passcode, click Text me new codes. Then enter the code and click Log In.

  2. Enter the code you receive in the verification code field.
  3. Then click Log In.

3. Choose the type of device you are adding. Then click Continue.

4. If you chose mobile phone, enter the phone number of your cell phone. Place a checkmark to indicate the phone number is correct. Then click Continue.

  1. Enter the 10 digit phone number for your cell phone.
  2. Place a checkmark to indicate the phone number is correct.
  3. Then click Continue.

5. You may be prompted to choose the operating system (OS) of the device you are adding. Select it and then click Continue.

6. Click I have Duo Mobile Installed. If you intend to use the Duo Mobile app, please make sure you download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store first.

For tablets, you will have to use the Duo Mobile app. For mobile phones, you do not need to use the Duo Mobile app, but you will need to click this button to finish adding your new phone.

7. If you do NOT want to use the Duo Mobile app, click My Settings & Devices to verify your new phone was added. If you do want to use the Duo Mobile app, continue to step 8.

7.1. If you clicked My Settings & Devices, you'll need to authenticate. Notice you can use the drop-down menu to authenticate with the device you just added. Skip to step 13.

The option to receive a push notification is only available if you have completed the setup of the Duo Mobile app.

  1. Use the drop-down menu to select the device you want to authenticate with.
  2. Click Call Me and you will receive a phone call from Duo with instructions on how to authenticate (normally just press a number on your phone's dial pad).
  3. Click Enter a Passcode to get a text with a verification code.

8. If you choose to set up the Duo Mobile app, open the Duo Mobile app on your device. Tap either Add Account or the plus sign icon at the top.

  1. Tap Add Account.
  2. Or tap the plus sign icon at the top right.

9. Tap OK to allow Duo Mobile to access the camera if prompted.

10. Hold your device up to the laptop/computer screen to scan the QR code.

11. Duo is now connected to your mobile device.

Notice that another way you can use your mobile device with Duo is to generate a passcode.

12. On your computer/laptop, click Continue to save your changes.

13. Click Device Options next to the device you want to remove.

14. Click the trash can icon to remove the device.

15. Click Remove.

16. You're done! By default, the newly added device will be set as your default device.

If you have multiple devices in Duo, use the Default Device drop-down menu to change the default device.

I want to add a second phone number/device to Duo

The instructions below show adding a new mobile phone to Duo. Depending on the type of device you are adding, the instructions may be slightly different. For example, if you are adding a tablet, you will be prompted to install the Duo Mobile app as part of the process to add the tablet.

1. Click Add a new device.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

2. Click Call Me to authenticate by phone call. Click Enter a Passcode to request an authentication code by text message. Or click Send me a Push if you have the Duo Mobile app set up on your current mobile device.

Duo will call, text, or send a push notification to your current default device in Duo.

2.2. After clicking Enter a Passcode, click Text me new codes. Then enter the code and click Log In.

3. Choose the type of device you are adding. Then click Continue.

7. If you do NOT want to use the Duo Mobile app, click My Settings & Devices to verify your new phone was added. If you do want to use the Duo Mobile app, continue to step 8.

7.1. If you choose My Settings & Devices, you do not need to authenticate again on this screen. Click on the drop-down menu to verify that the new phone number was added. You're done!

8. If you choose to set up the Duo Mobile app, open the Duo Mobile app on your device. Tap either Add Account or the plus sign icon at the top.

  2. Or tap the plus sign icon at the top right.

9. Tap OK to allow Duo Mobile to access the camera if prompted.

10. Hold your device up to the laptop/computer screen to scan the QR code.

11. Duo is now connected to your mobile device.

I want to change my default phone number/device in Duo

If you have multiple devices in Duo, you can change which one is set as your default device by using the instructions below.

1. Click My Settings & Devices.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

2.2. After clicking Enter a Passcode, click Text me new codes. Then enter the code and click Log In.

3. Use the Default Device drop-down menu to select which device you want to use as your default.

4. Then click Save.

5. As soon as the Save button becomes Saved, you're done!

I want to remove a device from my Duo account

You must have at least one device/phone in Duo. If you have only a single phone/device in Duo, you won't be able to remove it. Please see the instructions under The phone number/device in Duo is wrong and I want to change it.

1. Click My Settings & Devices.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

2.2. After clicking Enter a Passcode, click Text me new codes. Then enter the code and click Log In.

3. Click Device Options next to the device you want to remove.

4. Click the trash can icon to remove the device.

If you have multiple devices in Duo, use the Default Device drop-down menu to change the default device.

I want to change the "when I log in" settings to enable/disable automatic push notifications/phone calls

By default, Duo will prompt you to choose your authentication method (call, push, passcode) and device, but you can follow these instructions to update these settings.

1. Click My Settings & Devices.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

2.2. After clicking Enter a Passcode, click Text me new codes. Then enter the code and click Log In.

  3. Then click Log In.

3. Click on the When I log in drop-down menu to select the option you want.

If you choose to automatically receive push notifications or phone calls, be sure that you have that device with you all of the time!

  • Ask me to choose an authentication method: Duo will ask you each time which device and authentication method (call, push, passcode) you want to use.
  • Automatically send this device a Duo Push: Duo will send a push notification to this device automatically each time.
  • Automatically call this device: Duo will call this phone number automatically each time.

4. Click Save to save your changes.

5. As soon as the Save button becomes Saved, you're done!

I want to change the name of my device(s) in Duo

Changing the device name in Duo is particularly helpful for tablets since there is no phone number associated with them.

1. Click My Settings & Devices.

You do not need to choose an authentication method on this screen, however you will need to do it on the next screen.

3. Click Device Options next to the device whose name you want to change.

4. Click Change Device Name.

5. Type in the name you want for the device. Then click Save.

You can enter a longer name if you wish, but it will be cut off in the display on My Settings & Devices. You may want to choose a shorter name so you can easily identify the device in the list.

6. You're done! The new name shows up in the list.
